It was launched by Peter Wood in 2005 and is named after Sheila, which is Australian slang for a woman; it is part of Esure, an insurance group that Peter wood also founded. The brand is renowned for its adverting that features three women wearing pink sequined dresses singing various jingles, all of which promoted Sheila's wheels.

Originally the brand was conceived by Chris Wilkins, a copywriter, and Sian Vickers, his creative partners who had previously worked with the founder Peter Wood in 1990. The company introduced various female-focused benefits that made it unique from its competitors, such as female-friendly repairs, enhanced handbag covers, and a free counseling service accompanied by a comprehensive cover.

In 2007 the company ran a competition in which members of the public appeared on 'Make Me a Sheila Star' on of the company’s television adverts, which attracted more than 11,000 applicants who comprised of boys, babies, girl, women, and men. The youngest was 18 months old while the eldest was a 98-year-old. 30 members of the public were at last selected and appeared in two advertisements.
