About Check Into Cash
Check Into Cash was one of the first companies that provided payday loans. Founded by W. Allen Jones, it has grown to become one of the largest providers of payday loans in the US. Jones also played a major role in founding the Community Financial Services Association and is the nation’s biggest supporter of high school wrestling.
W. Allen Jones loves supporting his home town of Cleveland, Tennessee, having contributed to revitalizing Cleveland’s historic district, renovating Cleveland’s public library and providing scholarships to Cleveland’s high schools.
Yet Jones is also a controversial figure. The Center for Responsible Lending (CRL) has accused payday lenders—of which Check Into Cash is the nation’s biggest—of explicitly targeting minorities, specifically African Americans and Latinos, a practice the CRL refers to as “predatory profiling.” Jones has also been accused of racism, for allegedly saying that his town has enough Black people for a basketball team, but not so many that Cleveland is ridden with crime problems. In addition, a former employee alleged that the male managers of Check Into Cash would have their shoes polished by a African American who they labeled “Little Chocolate Man.”
In this video, Jon Oliver attacks providers of payday loans, referring to such loans as "predatory lending." Is his critique legitimate and justified and does it apply to Check Into Cash?
Payday loans are short-term loans that can range from $50 to $1000. You can get a loan online or at one of Check Into Cash’s retail locations. A title loan allows you to borrow up to $25,000 depending on the value of your car. Installment loans are medium-length loans that can be paid back with no pre-payment penalty.
It is possible to get a payday loan online or in a store, you do need an active checking account in order to be eligible. Interest and fees depends on where you live and how much you are lending.
With a title loan, you get your car title back once you have paid back the amount the borrowed and any outstanding fees. To get a title loan, you need to bring your vehicle, title, proof of ID issued by government and proof of residence and income. You can only get a title loan at one of Check Into Cash's stores.
