Not what I expected, but it worked…kind of

I paid my 2024 taxes, then in May 2025 Ownwell emails saying they estimate my 2024 value was about $47k too high. Fast forward, the county bumps the 2025 appraisal up by roughly $92k and I figure, fine, let’s hire them. They said yes, filed an appeal, and eventually the appeal was accepted. That’s the short happy part. The messy part is how little I actually knew while it was happening. Communication was the weak link. All I got were a couple of emails: “we filed,” and later, “appeal accepted.” Never a clear number on what they were asking for, never an explanation of how they reached the figure. So I found out after the fact that they only reduced the appraisal by about $21k, which translated to a tax savings of $168. That’s tiny compared to the big numbers they advertised and the county’s jump. I mean, $168 is pocket change for the trouble. Then the invoice came: 35% of that $168, plus an extra $20 for a “freeze” the county has always applied where I live — a freeze they didn’t earn or even cause. Also funny: their website now shows an estimated savings of $604 for my address, which is over three times what I actually got. So yeah, marketing and reality don’t match. With that said, they did deliver the appeal and got it accepted without drama, and I’ve had better outcomes with other companies but also worse. I’m slightly satisfied that the process went through and things were handled competently enough, but annoyed by the opaque communication and the fee on such a small gain. Would I use them again? Maybe, if they fix the communication and pricing, but right now I’m cautious.

Morning coffee and a mess of paperwork

no update that the appeal was denied, no docs unless I demanded them, and then I was told they don’t have to share records after you sign. That left me blindsided when they apparently agreed to a 60% tax increase without asking me first. Customer service answered late and gave vague replies, which is frustrating when you’re juggling bills and kids and all that. I wanted a straightforward partner; instead it’s been extra work on my end. Use caution and double-check deed protection if you try them.
