That sounded off, so I pushed a bit and was transferred to a manager. Communication up front was sloppy. Calls weren’t handled consistently and I got mixed messages. The manager, though, stayed calm, checked the system, and confirmed my return was indeed filed and accepted. So while the front-line handling and the handoff were messy, the back office delivered. I’m honestly relieved it ended up being taken care of and I appreciated the manager stepping in and clarifying things. If you go there, expect uneven service: some confusion, some pauses, but a reasonable outcome if someone higher up looks into it. I’d say it’s fine if you need help and want someone to finish the job for you, but don’t assume it will be seamless. I’m glad it worked out in the end, even if the experience could use better communication and a bit more organization.

That’s a bad place to start. After that it was a weird combo of being strung along, promises that never stuck, and a few moments that felt like actual negligence — more than just a simple mistake. At first I thought maybe it was a misunderstanding, maybe a missed form, fine — that happens. But then Roxanna became hard to reach. When I finally did get her on the phone she shifted blame and insisted we hadn’t given her everything she needed. We had. I checked. We literally handed her the records, so hearing that felt like being blamed for someone else’s screw-up. I called corporate because I wanted someone who could actually help, not more finger-pointing. The first person I spoke with, Tracy (she said her name early and seemed sympathetic), even guessed right away who I’d worked with, which told me this wasn’t a one-off. Tracy and another rep, Tasha, were polite and sounded professional on the phone — they promised every few weeks that a higher-up named Jeff would call me back within a couple business days. That call never came. Not once, not twice — dozens of times I was told Jeff would call. Nothing. That’s where the disappointment turned into frustration. It’s one thing to make a mistake, another to acknowledge it, and a third to disappear when the customer needs you to fix it. Then there was an incident that really made me worry about how they handle sensitive info: I parked next to her in the office parking lot and saw documents on the passenger seat with full social security numbers just sitting there in plain view. No attempt to hide them. That was careless and upsetting. I don’t care what the mistake was, you don’t let someone’s SSN sit on a car seat where anyone walking by could see it. We later had to file an amended return because the original wasn’t right, and once again we were told it would resolve things and we’d be fine. Months went by — silence, no confirmation of filing from Roxanna — and then earlier this year another notice arrives saying we still owe and interest had been accumulating. I called back, and the same story repeated: more excuses, claims that they tried to reach my ex and that her number was disconnected (it wasn’t), and once again the promise that Jeff would contact me. Still nothing. On Liberty’s site they have a 100% accuracy guarantee and, in my case, they refused to honor it. They knew Roxanna was at fault and basically went quiet, maybe hoping we’d go away. That felt shady. Now for balance: Tracy and Tasha actually sounded like they cared and were professional on the phone, so I won’t slam every single person there. Also, after this mess I took my returns to other preparers and haven’t had any issues since — so it’s not like tax filing is inherently broken. In the end I stopped waiting on Liberty to make it right, got an honest firm to fix the paperwork and pay off what was owed, and that relief was real. It would have been so much better if Liberty had owned up, paid what they promised, and kept in touch. A well-run business would’ve done that and probably kept me as a customer. Instead, the lack of follow-through and the security lapse are why I won’t use them again.

Small win: the tax prep itself wasn’t a mess, returns were accurate. Still, I’d advise anyone to get a firm, written estimate and ask about credentials up front. Don’t assume it’ll be the same fee twice. Be careful and compare a couple of options before you drop your refund into someone else’s hands.

    Billed, Promised, Then Ghosted

I got excuses and extra bills. Frustrating, and a lesson I won’t forget.
