I went into the appointment thinking I’d get a careful read on my labs, especially since I had listed Seaonique on the intake form. I was told my hormone results looked low across the board, not just for one point in my cycle. The provider sounded very sure that starting hormone therapy right away made sense, even though she also mentioned that she usually has patients stop birth control and retest first. At the time, I trusted that recommendation because I’m not a clinician. But later, the more I read about extended-cycle birth control, the less comfortable I felt. From what I could find, this type of pill can affect the hormone numbers being measured. That made me wonder why the obvious next step wasn’t simply stopping the pill, waiting, and checking my baseline again before committing to a fairly expensive treatment plan. The part that really changed my opinion was what happened afterward. I asked whether the roughly $700 in prescribed therapies could be refunded or reconsidered, since I had concerns about the original interpretation. I didn’t expect miracles, but I did expect someone to clearly walk me through the reasoning. They declined to help, and I felt like the conversation became more about my having agreed than whether the recommendation had been appropriately cautious. I’ve had rushed experiences with other telehealth companies, so I came in a little skeptical already. Still, I hoped for better here. The ordering process itself was easy, and the provider was confident, but confidence isn’t the same as careful care. I would have felt much better with a retest plan, transparent notes, and a more thoughtful response when I raised a reasonable concern. For me, this ended up being an expensive lesson in getting a second opinion. That would have been the responsible approach.

The lab work was organized, the provider took time to explain things, and I left that appointment feeling like we had a clear plan.
