one rep said designers don't give professional input, another later said they do. So I spent too much time telling them what I wanted. That part was annoying and made me doubt the service. Still, the logo looks sharp and the site functions fine for daily updates, so in the end I'm cautiously satisfied, though I'd warn others to clarify expectations up front.
Midstream confidence
Halfway through my third assignment with Reel Unlimited I actually paused and thought, huh, this is working. A friend had tipped me about them — a fellow writer I met at a meetup — and at first I signed up because I needed steady gigs. The thing that sealed it was when they sent back clear, useful feedback that didn't feel like nitpicking but actually helped the piece land better. Suddenly projects kept rolling in, not massive ones all the time, but a steady stream that let me plan a month ahead. The team is upbeat, quick to answer questions, and they do give notes that matter. There've been small hiccups — timing sometimes, or a brief miscommunication — but they fix it and move on, which I appreciate. It's freeing to have income I can count on and editors who push me to write smarter. I'm honestly glad my friend told me about them; I'm thankful it's turned out so reliable and supportive. Would recommend to other writers who want steady work and room to grow.
Not exactly what I expected
Cold call while I was in the middle of client work. That was my first doubt. Then they sent an unpaid brief. I took it anyway because I figured exposure and a new portfolio piece might be worth it. I did the job. Took time out of a busy week. Delivered exactly what they asked for. Then silence. Long silence. I waited. Emailed. Nothing. After I left a review they finally replied and said it can take two to three months to review submissions. That should have been mentioned up front. Two to three months is a long time when you're juggling paid gigs and bills. The replies I eventually got sounded professional at first and then turned a bit cold and defensive. That rubbed me the wrong way. My early doubts didn’t really go away. If anything they grew. I’ll admit I was hoping for a smooth, quick exchange — maybe some feedback, maybe a shoutout — but that didn’t happen. Use this if you have spare time and patience. If you value your hours, be cautious. My experience felt off. Your mileage may vary.
One-at-a-time works, but the fine print and refunds are messy
it can be useful if you only need one live site at a time, but don’t expect clear disclosure or fast refunds. I signed up thinking this would be a flexible design partner for several client sites I maintain day-to-day. In practice their policy (only one active web project at once) was a dealbreaker and it wasn’t made obvious during checkout or onboarding. Worse, the links to the Terms and Privacy on the Stripe page were broken, so I couldn’t even read what I was agreeing to until after purchase. When I canceled, they told me the refund was processed on May 28. I kept asking for tracking info like an ARN and got vague replies saying it was done. It turned out they didn’t actually initiate the refund until June 16 — almost three weeks later — and it only cleared after repeated follow-ups and a firm mention of a dispute. That part felt like I had to shove them along, which left me uneasy about how client funds are handled. To be fair, while active the design work itself was fine — quick turnarounds on small fixes and decent quality for landing pages and routine site updates. So it’s not worthless, and it does solve daily maintenance tasks if you only run one project at a time. Still, the lack of upfront transparency and slow refund process are significant negatives. My advice: document everything, ask for the exact refund reference up front, and double-check that the one-project limitation suits your workflow before you commit.
Late handoffs, missing people
I started with them because the subscription was cheaper and the trial week looked promising. At first the designs were fine. Not great, but fine. Then everything slowed down and the small frictions added up. Their app is awkward. You end up bouncing between Figma, Slack, and that app — and none of it talks to the other cleanly. I left comments in Figma that never showed up as tasks. So things sat. Revisions piled up. Deadlines stretched. They promised 24–48 hour turnarounds. What I got was more like 3–7 days, consistently. That difference matters. It killed momentum on our side. Customer service rarely actually helped. Messages in Slack felt like triage, not problem solving. Sometimes the PM answered curtly. Other times nobody answered at all for a day or two. Then, without any heads-up, my project manager was replaced. One moment they were there; the next moment another person was in the channel and my original contact was gone. I asked why. I had to ask. The answer came only after I pushed. That lack of transparency was frustrating. It felt like poor management, frankly. The refund they issued for three months looked fair on paper, so I accepted it, and for a moment I thought we'd close it cleanly. But later the money was reversed back into their account with a vague explanation. That was the last straw. Around the same time several designers reached out to me on LinkedIn. They said they had stopped getting paid. One told me they were being paid as little as forty dollars per web page. That would explain rushed work and long delays. A developer contacted me too and admitted the code wasn't up to a standard he would normally accept. After three months and roughly $3,600 spent, I had nothing usable and a messy account that was credited then debited again. If you consider them, check the billing carefully. Ask how they treat freelancers. Insist on real response times in writing. And be prepared for clunky tooling and spotty communication. There were moments I thought it could work, and the designs sometimes showed potential, but the delivery and service were the real problems.
Quiet satisfaction
I pick clients who communicate well, and clients pick contractors who deliver quality. A quick reply would have made this a very different review. I’ll wait a bit longer. Meanwhile, I’ll keep doing the work the way I’d expect someone else to do it for me.
