On a Wednesday the class barely looked up from their screens. That’s a good start. I’ve taught middle school computers for years. I tried Scratch and old HTML lessons from a textbook before. At first I was skeptical about another platform. CodeMonkey turned out to be different. The gamified lessons keep kids engaged. Classroom management is simpler now. There are several ways to set up classes so I can drop an embedded code link into our LMS and kids start right away. One thing I appreciate most is the built-in quizzes. They actually let me check understanding before moving on, which saves time and prevents misunderstandings later. I use block coding with sixth graders, a simpler JS-like track for seventh, and Python in eighth. There’s also a junior version that works well for students who need more support. I’ve used other vendors that promised the same and didn’t deliver, so I was cautious. Still, this has been reliable for six years and my special needs students can work through it too. Dry, straightforward, no fluff. It doesn’t solve every problem, but for teaching coding basics in a typical middle school it’s been a solid, practical choice.
Sketchy trial, decent product
the trial length and cancellation rules were vague and felt buried in legalese. I cancelled when I thought I was still in the free window, but because my kid logged in once after that, they charged the yearly fee and at first refused a refund. That’s where delivery/customer support becomes the story: initial responses were slow and defensive, like they were protecting the sale more than helping a customer. After escalating and mentioning consumer rights, support finally agreed to a full refund — took extra time and patience, but the outcome was good. So, mixed feelings: product = usable and fun; process = frustrating and too clever for its own good. I’ve had friendlier, faster refunds from other education apps, so this stood out. If you’re trying this, keep a close eye on dates and be ready to push back with support if anything looks off. Shipping of service was bumpy, customer service redeemed itself after a fight, but they should just make things clearer to start with.
Ten years, practical use
a mix of kindergartners poking at a bright interface and an eighth grader quietly debugging Python — that's been my classroom for a decade with this tool. What I notice most is the day-to-day feel: it doesn't pretend to be flashy, it just works. Compared to other platforms that promised a lot but were clunky, this one is steady — not perfect, sometimes alignment or wording in a lesson is off, but overall reliable. If you care about something that fits into real classroom rhythms and reduces busywork, this will feel like a sensible choice. I still learn small tricks from it now and then.
Kids coding program
The coding program was actually pretty cool, my kid really liked it. But let me tell you, the customer service was a disaster. I needed to reset my child's progress, so I reached out to them by email. Instead of helping me out, they straight up canceled my subscription! Can you believe it? I had paid for a whole year but only used it for a week. They only gave me some of my money back, like seriously? I tried reaching out to them for like 3 weeks, but they just left me on read. I had to get my credit card company involved. My kid enjoyed it, but I'm not going back. I'll be looking for a different program for sure.
