Mixed bag — practical but shaky

their referral program—promised credit never materialized, and when I asked, replies were curt and unhelpful. Support is basically a chatbot that loops you around; real people rarely follow up. Technical glitches are annoying too — random logouts in the middle of a session, messages that don't send, students dropped mid-lesson. Worst part: tone of the platform when families request refunds; teachers get emails that sound accusatory and even warnings about account removal if refunds aren't handled fast. That created a tense atmosphere where I started dreading log-ins. I used to recommend it, now I only use it reluctantly because it's convenient for scheduling, but emotionally it left me frustrated and a little let down. I still hope they improve things soon, seriously.

Soot sprites mid-air, and the site actually worked

Halfway through a messy attempt at a soot sprite my kid looked up and said, “This is actually fun,” and I remember why I signed him up in the first place — lockdown boredom, zero playdates, and the desperate hunt for something interesting that didn’t feel like school. The signup was straightforward enough (could’ve been a hair more intuitive), and the class links showed up right on time — that felt reassuring. Customer support answered a weird billing question in plain English and helped move a class when our schedule shifted, which I appreciated way more than I expected. Teachers are vetted, the art and game clubs are age-sorted so he’s not stuck with a bunch of teenagers, and they even accept charter funding for hybrid homeschoolers. Minor tech hiccup once, fixed quickly. All in all, delivery and support made this a reliable little lifeline for our extracurricular needs.

Locked out while they kept taking payments

I set up a referral group and recommended a lot of other teachers (I tracked 258), and I was supposed to bring in a big fall class load — roughly 310 students across my flex classes. Then, out of nowhere, my account was closed on August 17 and I lost access to all my curriculum and my class pages. All the classes showed canceled, students gone from my roster, everything. I tried support and heard nothing for weeks. When they finally replied on September 13, their position was basically that because my account was closed they didn’t have to honor the referral payouts. So that expected referral money — about fifty-one thousand — evaporated according to them. What bothered me most was that I found out the platform was still registering families into those same classes after my account was closed. I made a test account with a new email, signed up and paid for a slot in one of my old listings. They were collecting payments while I couldn’t access my own content. After a day I asked for a refund and was offered only a prorated amount, which made me suspect they were keeping courses live just long enough to collect a week or two of payments before parents noticed there was no teacher. Dry, transactional, and pretty unethical in my view. I’m a little relieved I tested it and caught it, but it cost me students and income. Recommend caution if you depend on the platform for steady work.

That moment I knew this was right

Outschool wasn’t just filling hours, it was changing the way she thinks. We needed something different because our local school felt like managed chaos and my son was bored out of his mind with busywork. My daughter needed flexibility (she’s got a lot going on) and real engagement; my son needed structure that didn’t insult his intelligence. The difference showed in the small moments — the teacher answering questions thoughtfully, the class breaking into tiny groups, and even when we suggested a tweak, the instructor actually tried it and came back saying it helped. I felt that relief and a bit of disbelief, honestly. She’s 12 and handling Algebra II, scheduling her week, and yeah, she’s running little business case experiments at the dinner table. I love that parents can peek into classes and leave honest reviews — it keeps things honest. Three years in, I’m still pleasantly surprised daily. It’s practical, warm, and actually feels like education that prepares her for… life. I recommend it to friends who are tired of the same old school song.

    Privacy-first fixes needed

I'm hesitant to keep using Outschool until they fix their privacy approach. I liked the idea—lots of class options, easy sign-up—but the way they handle cameras and photos made me uncomfortable fast. I started using Outschool a few months ago for after-school enrichment; first impression was positive: classes were varied, scheduling was simple, and my kid liked a couple of the teachers. That’s why this bothered me so much — the platform works fine on the surface, but the privacy rules are patchy and, honestly, risky. The policy that basically forces either a live camera or a parent/child photo sent electronically felt heavy-handed. If your child won’t be on camera, Outschool asks for a photo of the child and parent together. That might seem like a reasonable verification step, but there’s no clear public policy about how those images are stored, who can access them, or how long they’re kept. They tell you to send an image, but not whether it’s encrypted in transit or at rest. That’s a big red flag considering even major companies get breached. What made me angrier was an actual incident: one teacher apparently kept recording after class ended and captured private home audio/video. Imagine realizing someone’s recorded your living room when the kid thought the call was over. There’s no obvious agreement that allows teachers to do that, and I couldn’t find anything on Outschool’s site promising safeguards against it or steps they take if it happens. I’m not saying every teacher is bad—far from it. There are many competent instructors. But this incident pointed to shaky oversight. It suggests that a teacher’s judgment can vary wildly and that platform controls aren’t tight enough to stop misuse. Practically, I’d like Outschool to do three things: remove or significantly revise the photo mandate (offer safer verification methods), publish a clear, public policy about image use and retention, and implement stronger technical safeguards so teachers can’t keep recording after class. Until they provide those, parents need to be careful and ask explicit questions before enrolling. The service has real value and my kid enjoyed lessons, so I’m not writing it off, but I’m cautious now and would only use it for low-risk classes or after getting written assurances. Small things could fix this, but they have to act — privacy isn’t optional.

That little click when things finally made sense

my 8-year-old was in a class, I sat right beside her, and the teacher kept insisting there was another kid in the room. I kept saying it was just me, that I was her mom, and the teacher still kind of pressed on, in this sharp way, like she was talking to a kid instead of a parent. It made me uneasy, honestly. Then a few days later I got that email saying I’d let multiple learners into the class and that there was no way to fix it retrospectively. My first reaction was disbelief — like, seriously? Then I dug in, because before I jumped to conclusions I wanted to see what actually happened. I said, okay, show me the evidence, the recording, something. I’ve had mixed experiences with online companies before — some jump straight to blame, others at least look into things. I asked Outschool to review the class recording, and at that point I wasn’t convinced they would. But they did. They listened, they checked the footage, and they found that my younger daughter had briefly peeked in for maybe five seconds before running off to play upstairs. She wasn’t enrolled, she didn’t stay, she didn’t take part; it was a tiny curious glance, that’s it. When Outschool came back with that clarification and the teacher sent a short apology for the tone, I felt satisfied. That small moment — when someone actually checked and communicated clearly — is when the stress left me. Not because I wanted drama resolved, but because someone took the time to be fair. Would I prefer the teacher not to assume things in the first place? Absolutely. The whole episode could’ve been handled softer, without the accusatory vibe. But customer service mattered here: checking recordings, listening to my side, then correcting the record — that’s what turned my frustration into a calm, relieved “okay.” So yeah, lesson learned: ask for evidence, don’t assume guilt, and give a company the chance to do the right thing. It doesn’t erase the awkward moment, but it does make me more likely to give them another shot.

    Online learning platform feedback

The online learning platform is just fantastic for students! It's so convenient and the teaching style really keeps you engaged and learning. But, it would be even better if students could have the flexibility to customize their schedule and skip a class when necessary. And having a contact person available on the dashboard for any questions or concerns would make the whole experience even better.

I just took a dance class on this platform and it was so much fun! The instructor was super talented and made the steps easy to follow, even for a newbie like me. The class was engaging, enjoyable, and now I want to do more. I definitely suggest it to anyone interested in trying out dance.

    Piano lessons

It's been a couple of weeks since my granddaughter started taking piano lessons with this really great and professional teacher. She's been having such a blast, even though it's just once a week. We're definitely thinking about sticking with it and maybe even adding more lessons in the future.

    Virtual class experience

I was really impressed by the virtual classes I took through this platform. The teacher was super knowledgeable and experienced, but also really nice, understanding, and supportive to all of us students. My daughter has made huge strides in a short time, and I couldn't be happier with how things have gone for her.

    Animation course, flexible

My son really wanted to learn how to animate, so we decided to sign up for an online course. He's loving every minute of it! The course was a little expensive, so we can't do it every week, but being able to pause it whenever we want makes it super convenient.

    Enrollment Issue

I had some trouble signing up my students for classes online and I couldn't figure it out on my own, so I contacted customer service. The reply I got wasn't very helpful. They told me to check out an article about enrolling charter school students, even though I had already made an account. Also, the email came really late at night, which wasn't great. I was pretty let down by the slow and unhelpful support I received.

    US History Class Purchase

I recently signed my kid up for a US History class on Outschool and it turned out to be a great decision. The teacher was really interesting and knew their stuff, and my daughter was super excited after the class, wanting to share everything she learned about WW2 and life during that time in the US. It was awesome to see her so engaged and interested, and it really shows how good the class was. Outschool is a cool platform that offers fun and educational classes for kids, and I'll definitely use it again for tutoring or helping my child build new skills. I'm happy I gave Outschool a shot - it's been a positive experience for my kid's education.

    Online class not fun

I thought the teacher was pretty cool, but the class just wasn't my thing. I felt rushed and didn't really understand what was happening. It was nice of the teacher to contact my parent to offer help, but I still didn't like it. If you enjoy virtual classes, then maybe you'd like it. But I came to the conclusion that it's just not for me!

    Sewing class for kids

I found this really cool sewing class for kids and let me tell you, it's amazing! I enrolled my 9-year-old daughter and she's having a blast. The teacher is super friendly and gives great feedback all the time. The best part is we can rewatch the videos after class, which is perfect for practicing. I highly suggest it to any kid who is interested in sewing!

Outschool has seriously been a game-changer for us. We've only been using it for a few weeks, but let me tell you, it's been absolutely amazing. The sign-up process is super easy and simple, so finding classes that fit my kid's needs is a breeze. They offer such a wide range of live and pre-recorded classes, it's really cool to be able to customize our learning experience. I can totally see us using this platform to give my kids extra help outside of their regular classes.

    Recent enrollment in multiple classes

My time with Outschool has been great. I started by signing my kid up for one class, just to see how it'd go. Now, we've got him in three classes. The teachers have gone above and beyond - they're patient, smart, and really connect with the students. There's a ton of different classes to choose from on Outschool, so I've been able to find ones that match up with what my son likes. This has helped him stay interested and excited about learning, he even asks when the next class will be. Overall, I'm really happy with how well my child is learning and growing because of Outschool.
