A bit relieved by the end

I walked in unsure. The place looked tidy and felt safe right away. Staff were calm and not pushy. The woman who helped me, Rutu, took time to explain the steps and the fees. There was a short wait—nothing major—but what made me relax was when she showed the offer and how it was calculated. That’s the moment I knew I was actually happy with the deal. It wasn’t perfect; I’d have liked a slightly higher quote, but it felt fair and transparent. If you go, bring your ID and a little patience. Small things, but overall a solid visit. I’d go back, and recommend them to friends.

Strange pickup experience at St Helens

they insisted on photo ID. I showed my bus pass with photo, name and DOB and even the confirmation email and the bank card I paid with. Nope. Came back later with my passport and it was fine, but while I waited one staff member was dealing with someone selling gold and another person without photo ID was accepted just because they had a bank card. I’m disabled, don’t drive, my husband was ill so we paid for cabs both ways — about £8 each trip — so this wasn’t trivial. No apology, just the money basically thrown at me and nobody said please or thanks. Won’t risk it again.

Window price promise that fell apart

two deposits totaling £235.50. That was my commitment — I’d come back to collect the ring. The day before my pickup the chain launched a 20% off on selected jewelry, and the left window of this branch was basically shouting that stuff was discounted. It looked consistent, so I assumed the ring would be included. I checked other stores’ windows and it matched. The display really gave you that impression, which is why I felt comfortable returning.
Inside, I said I wanted to take the ring out. The first colleague looked at the contract and told me a different final balance — a lot more than I expected. I told her I’d seen the sale and that the onyx signet style was listed as part of it elsewhere. She called a colleague, who went to fetch the ring and then didn’t come back for a while. Then another guy, Robert, cut in, used my first name abruptly, and told me flatly the ring wasn’t on sale and the price was full — £355. Right then the doubts I had before buying settled into a real, immediate question: was the store honoring their own sale signage, or not?
He asked if I wanted a refund as if that was the obvious next step. I’d come in to pick up an item, not to be offered a refund as a default. I wasn’t looking to be difficult, I was trying to resolve something that should have been straightforward based on what the display promised. At that point I asked to speak to someone who could confirm the store policy; he said to contact customer services and come back. That’s a weird loop to put a paying customer into. I left, called customer services immediately — got transferred around, told to ask the manager to speak to his area manager. Pretty standard runaround stuff, which only made the whole situation feel less professional.
I filed an official complaint that day through the Resolver platform when I got home and followed up by phone. The call handler said I’d get a reply within five working days. I didn’t get anything substantive without chasing; after a couple of emails and phone calls I finally received an acknowledgement. Small win — at least someone logged the issue — but it was late and it didn’t fix the immediate problem at the branch counter.
What surprised me, oddly, was how clear the pricing guidance from head office seems to be in theory. I learned that stores have a colour-coded sheet to show which items get which discounts. Other branches had used it and adjusted prices accordingly. So my irritation wasn’t just about this one ring — it was about inconsistency and what looks like staff inventing rules on the fly. If one place is following head office instructions and another isn’t, that inconsistency is worse than a simple mistake because it affects trust.
A second unexpected detail: despite the poor in-store handling, the window display itself was actually accurate in showing which categories were included in the sale. That contributed to my initial confidence. It’s weird to praise part of the same thing I’m criticizing, but it’s true — the visuals did match the advertised sale in every other way. That mismatch between presentation and action is what made the whole thing feel like a bait-and-switch.
I’ve spent a lot at this chain over the years, and family members shop there too, so this felt personal. Over a couple of days I’d bought almost £1,726.50 of other goods from that Croydon branch — so I wasn’t some occasional customer trying to scam a discount. That’s why the whole “it’s not on sale” answer rubbed so badly; it came off as a selective enforcement of rules that only affected the thing I’d walked in for.
I’m done going back to that specific store. I’m asking for a refund of what’s left in the layaway account and I plan to buy similar pieces elsewhere. On the plus side, having to chase customer service showed me that there is a process and somebody will eventually record a complaint. It’s slow and annoying, but it exists. That small bit of procedure is the only concrete reassurance I have right now.
Bottom line: go in with your eyes open. If a display suggests a sale, don’t assume you’re covered until it’s confirmed on the ticket or by someone who actually follows the company’s head-office paperwork. If you value consistency and clear, prompt resolutions, this branch can be frustrating. If you can tolerate the extra legwork of calling and filing a formal complaint, you might get somewhere eventually, but don’t count on a smooth pick-up.

    Slow payout, decent shop staff

apparently they hold onto your money for a minimum of 10 working days no matter what, even if the check has technically cleared in their account earlier. That felt misleading; the receipt shows a clearance date but not the sooner payment possibility, so I felt mis-sold on the timeline. I was charged a fairly hefty fee for the service and that just rubbed salt in the wound since quicker, cheaper options exist.
It's annoying because I use these services to bridge short gaps — groceries, bills, rent — so timing actually matters. On the plus side, the shop staff were professional and kept me updated; on the downside, the company’s policy and how it’s communicated are poor. I’d expect either faster release of funds once cleared or a refund of fees if there's a clear internal hold that's not customer-facing. I'm not thrilled, but I'm also not surprised there are better alternatives. I’ll probably try one of those next time.

    Quick delivery, solid service

I popped into the Welling H&T because a friend had mentioned their travel currency. I only meant to pick up some cash for a trip, but Rachael and Toni were so thorough and friendly I stayed and looked around. They explained the exchange options, helped weigh up a couple of jewelry pieces, and offered to have the gift wrapped and delivered to my house the next day — which they did, right on time with tracking info. The service was professional without being stiff, and you could tell they knew what they were doing. Pricing was fair, not bargain basement but reasonable for convenience. Small things like a follow-up call and the prompt delivery made a big difference. I'll go back next time I need currency or a last-minute present.

    The moment it clicked

I walked in skeptical. Had a couple of rough runs with sketchy places before, so I was braced for the usual fine print. The guy who helped me — I didn’t catch his name either — talked me through everything, slowly and without jargon. The moment I relaxed was when he patiently spelled out the rates and the timeline, and there were no sudden surprises. That was the turning point. I left feeling actually relieved and, yeah, a bit grateful. They didn’t rush or pressure me, which mattered more than I expected. If you’ve been burned before, this feels different. I’d honestly go back. Small stuff could've been quicker, but the honesty mattered. Not flashy, but solid service. Honestly, that was enough for me.

    Sticking with this shop

I won't go anywhere else after finding the Springburn store in Glasgow. I've been back a bunch of times and the folks there are honestly the reason — patient with you, happy to talk through options, and they don't rush when you want to understand the legal side or what things will cost. They build a proper rapport, like they're familiar faces, which makes the whole thing more relaxed and not so clinical. Their jewelry prices are really good too, not overpriced like some places. Every visit feels professional but friendly, and the staff genuinely care, explaining stuff with patience and detail. Even when I called the head office they were helpful and actually worked with me to explore choices. If you're thinking about using them, ask questions and take your time — you'll probably end up liking it as much as I do.
