It was supposed to be a quick stop while my friend and I were out in Norwich on a really hot day, so we had sandals on. At first, the place seemed normal, though the employee was sitting in the window chatting when we walked in. We looked around but couldn’t find what we needed. On our way out, we said goodbye, and she replied, “This isn’t a swimming pool.” Honestly, it took a minute to understand she meant our shoes. It felt unnecessarily snarky and pretty embarrassing. Maybe she was joking, but it didn’t land at all. I left feeling unwelcome, not like I’d want to come back.
