    Fifteen years, then a curveball

I’ve used this card for everyday stuff for years — groceries, gas, monthly bills, you name it — so I upgraded. Did the work to meet the spend in the first few months, moved most charges over, and kept paying things off like I always do. I even paid the first statement a few days early. Then, a few days later, I get a notice saying I’d missed the minimum payment. Wait, what? I’d paid it. Turns out a small balance from a couple of days of charges showed up and their system flagged it. Called customer service expecting someone to say “sorry” and fix it. Nope — polite, sure, but zero flexibility. “Pay us,” they said. No consideration for a 15-year customer who literally just sent thousands in payments days before.
That was annoying, but I wanted the three free nights — that was the whole point of the upgrade. Went to book and was told the nights were only for brand-new cardholders, not upgrades. I specifically asked before upgrading; I was told it would be fine. I talked to Eric, then his manager Derrick (yes, truly), and they both stuck to the policy: “too bad.” No help, no real explanation, just policy. I told them I’d use one free night and some points for the trip in June and cancel when I got home. They didn’t care.
Bottom line: the card worked fine day-to-day, but the delivery of the promised benefit and the customer service around it left me frustrated and disappointed. It’s not even angry so much as tired — after fifteen years you expect a little leeway or at least clear answers. I switched most spending to CapOne, and I’m now shopping for a new secondary card that won’t pull this stunt. If you rely on perks and want consistent service, beware.

Morning buffet left me puzzling more than pleased

rice, a plain potato thing, some boiled greens. Not bad, just... same every day and surprisingly sparse for a hotel that bills itself as upscale. I asked at the front desk and once at the kitchen, and the answer was basically that there wasn’t anything extra they could whip up. That felt blunt and a little odd. On the bright side, one place surprised me with a simple seaweed salad that was actually well-seasoned and made the morning better — small win, but memorable because it was rare. What I missed most were simple, obvious options: a decent tofu dish, sautéed vegetables, clearly marked vegetarian choices, or at least someone willing to make an egg-free plate. Paying full price for the buffet and still scrambling for something balanced felt off. I’m not asking for gourmet magic, just a bit more effort and flexibility. If Marriott wants to live up to its inclusivity talk, staff probably need a tiny refresher on vegetarian basics and the breakfast line could use clearer labels and a few dependable veggie dishes. I’ll stay again for convenience, but I’d hope for improvement next time.

That weird relief when the missing night finally showed up

49 qualifying stays and me sweating that one last night to hit Platinum. I’d read the bit about getting an elite night for every $5k spend, so I loaded more than $5k on the card in December hoping the extra elite night would push me over. It didn’t post right away, which sent me down the joyful rabbit hole of customer service calls. At first I was flat-out annoyed — reps giving me the “it can take weeks” line and no one owning it. I called a few times, repeated my story, and yes, got some rote apologies that didn’t really help.
