this year they announce sunsetting it. Lovely timing. I had hours of files to get out and suddenly pro features I needed were behind a wall. Support’s answers were…creative: “We gave everyone pro access” (okay), “here’s the app URL” (I wasn’t born yesterday), “try incognito” (sure). Pop-ups for a paid subscription kept blocking exports, which is just bizarre for a tool they’re retiring. The moment I knew I was satisfied — weirdly — was when I found a shaky workaround: installing the PWA, forcing exports one by one, and watching the progress bar finally hit 100%. Relief, a little victory dance, and a lot of grumbling. So yeah, saved my work, annoyed at how it went down, but glad I didn’t lose years of stuff. Would’ve been smoother if they’d been less stingy with access during the shutdown.
Still wary after upgrades
I stuck with Corel for years—daily work, client layouts, vinyl cuts, packaging mockups—so I hesitated before moving to the newer release. I worried about the slowdowns I'd read about and the switch toward monthly payments, and honestly that made me pause. In practice the slowness returned on my machine between 2018 and 2021, and support kept telling me my setup was the problem. I even upgraded my PC to silence that line, but then the ticket was closed again because my new rig was "too new." That was pretty maddening. The only real workaround for me was to keep using Corel 2018, which still runs fine, while the newer versions kept needing fixes or a fresh purchase. So did my doubts vanish? Not really. There's a little relief that older software still works, and I can get my daily jobs done, but the support and upgrade path left me disappointed and wary about future buys.
Morning sketch session turned into a small obsession
I was sitting with my tablet and a half-cold cup of coffee when I opened the 7-day Painter trial, and wow — the brushes felt oddly familiar, like real bristles on a textured sheet. I used it for quick morning sketches and some evening color studies, and the blending and pressure response just made the whole thing flow. It’s the kind of program that makes you forget you’re staring at a screen; the layers and grain give a nice tactile sense. That said, the signup and download were easy enough, but I hit a real snag trying to cancel before the trial ended. The site kept saying there was no active subscription even though the trial was clearly on my account, and support replies came slow and chats dropped after long waits. I ended up moving money around and now might block my card just to be safe, which was annoying and stressful in an otherwise fun week of drawing. Overall, I like how it handles brushes and daily sketch work — I’d recommend trying it, but be careful with the trial management.
Old copy, new headache
snappy vector handling, predictable export, nothing fancy but it did the job. After a Windows reinstall I expected the usual reactivation routine. I had the serial, I had internet access, so I assumed I’d be back up in ten minutes. Nope. Activation kept failing and asking for an online connection, which I already had. Sent a support form (too late to call) explaining the situation and figured they’d help. Next morning the reply said they no longer support that version and they won’t activate it anymore. That was a surprise — not a pleasant one.
I appreciate company policies, but it felt cold and inflexible. The rep’s “solution” was 40% off the current suite, which still left me with a pricey bill. I tried another route: bought CorelDraw Standard 2021, installed it, entered the serial (accepted), then hit an error during registration. Called support again and got told 2021 isn’t supported either. At that point it just felt like hitting a wall. Service left a lot to be desired — no clear path forward and little empathy.
On the plus side, x6 still runs great on my project files and the UI is familiar, so I haven’t lost work. If you rely on older versions, be warned: reactivation may not be straightforward. If anyone else dealt with this and found a workaround, please share — I’m still trying to figure out the least painful fix. When software feels like a cart with a wobbly wheel
clumsy, unreliable, like a car you’re not sure will start in the morning. It’s annoying in small ways and catastrophic in big ways — losing an export mid-project is one of those big ways. I eventually moved to Illustrator because I needed dependability more than loyalty, and honestly I sigh a bit less now. There’s a little relief mixed with irritation. Would I recommend Corel to someone who can’t afford surprises? Not without a serious warning. If you value a predictable tool — and who doesn’t, right — consider that before you commit.
Promising tools, clunky reality
is this going to be another "looks great in ads" kind of thing? Spoiler: some parts were nice, some parts drove me up a wall.
