    Morning unboxing surprise

    I opened the box over coffee this morning and the product actually slips pretty much into my routine — I use it daily for errands and it does the job. Delivery was on time, that was smooth.     Nice rates, awkward Quicken hiccup

    their setup doesn't play nice with my Quicken for Mac. Every morning Quicken tries to update and Langley blocks it until they text me a code — the only bank that does this. For now I'll keep most accounts at NFCU and USAA until they fix it.

I pulled $67,000, left enough in checking for autopay and payroll so my business wouldn't hit a snag, and carried the cash to my car — yes, I really did. I opened an account across town and only when I demanded a cashier’s check did the manager suddenly act like they cared. Felt staged. The new bank isn’t flawless, but moving funds happened fast and things kept running. I’d banked there for years, so it stung. Delivery of funds was surprisingly quick. Customer service here was disappointing, but the end result mostly worked, so mixed feelings.

Then in May I got my first statement and saw a $100,000 HELOC I never applied for. At first I assumed identity theft. My score dropped about 75 points. I lost the favorable rates I had before. I tried calling. It was a nightmare. Long waits, transfers, and mixed messages. I’d been a member of other credit unions before and this was not the usual experience. That made me more frustrated, not less. So I went to the branch. The Short Pump staff were courteous. Short, factual answers. They looked at the file. They admitted a loan officer had pulled my report and processed a loan I didn’t sign for. No spin. They offered a tangible next step. They printed a correction letter, arranged for an expedited dispute with the credit bureaus, and sent a fraud alert request. They also agreed to stop payments to the dealer while repairs were addressed. It wasn’t instant magic. There were still holdovers and a couple of follow-up calls I had to make. But the moment I held the signed correction letter and the manager said they’d push the dispute through that day, I felt satisfied. It was a small, dry moment. No hugs, no grand apologies. Just a piece of paper and a timestamp. That was enough. The unexpected part was that a local branch visit actually moved things. If I could change anything it would be the phone system and initial response. Overall, I left feeling that the immediate damage would be repaired, even if the road there was clumsy. Practical, competent at the branch. The rest, not so much.
