the techs were honest and actually fixed it. Still, I’ve got a year left on my subscription and I’m hesitant to reinstall ZA Extreme after this.

I won't be a customer again. I got an auto-renewal notice even though I never opt into that. That alone is bad. The cancellation link they give doesn't go straight to cancel. It takes you to another site and you have to hunt around. That feels designed to keep money rolling in. I'm in the UK so they sent the notice because they're required to, but the way it's set up doesn't meet the spirit of the rules. The CMA guidance says canceling should be easy. It wasn't. The software itself ran fine on my machine, and detection seemed okay, if not outstanding. So the product works. Still, shady renewal flows matter. I've had subscriptions with other security vendors where you can cancel in one click. That's not the case here. Small things like that change how I view a company. I prefer transparency. This was neither transparent nor straightforward. I'll look elsewhere next time. For current ZoneAlarm users: check your renewal settings now. Do it, before you notice the charge and then start digging. I never enable auto-renew when I sign up, so how it happened is odd. Minor, but telling.
That upgrade caught me off guard
my remaining 531 days on the old license suddenly didn’t seem to matter. I reached out to support thinking this would be a straightforward migration question — you know, “How do I keep my subscription?” — and I’m still in the middle of that story weeks later. Support asked for proof of purchase (fine), then started questioning how I bought it (less fine), and after I sent everything they asked for more info, and then I got bounced between agents. Six different reps over nearly a month, and no manager ever chimed in. That part wore thin fast. The back-and-forth felt like talking to different departments who didn’t really read the case notes, which is annoying and a real time sink.
Another thing that gave me pause was the online-only installer. On one hand it was quick and unobtrusive, and I was honestly impressed by how little it interfered with day-to-day use. On the other hand, not having an offline installer felt heavy-handed — I’d rather have the choice, especially if you want to test an install on a spare machine or do tethered setups. Privacy-aware folks might raise an eyebrow at background processes the installer can run; I did. Still, after reinstalling and letting it run, the protection itself seemed solid and the system impact minimal, so that was a pleasant surprise I didn’t expect.
Would I recommend it? I’d say yes, but with caveats: if you value a smooth, modern client and decent detection, it’s worth trying — just keep receipts, screenshots, and be prepared to pester support if you hit license migration trouble. I told my brother that — he liked the protection and the lightweight feel, but he warned me to document everything.
