I saw this on a travel forum and almost passed — worried about setup and needing another phone to scan the QR. Tried it anyway and glad I did; eSIM works solid, setup was a bit annoying but OK.
Low-data warning timing
The setup instructions were actually clear and turning off the US provider tip helped me, so that part was good. I use this on my commute for podcasts and light browsing. Problem is the low-data alert comes too late — at ~500MB — and my attempts to top up off public cellular failed twice, so yeah, kinda frustrating. Works otherwise.
No signal where it mattered
Sitting in a tiny airport cafe with zero bars on my phone felt ridiculous — and that’s how the whole trip started. I bought a "global" SIM because the site said it covered all my stops; in reality there was no service in the country I needed it most. The SIM just didn’t work, so I ended up racking up roaming charges on my regular carrier while waiting for a fix. Support finally admitted they don’t cover that country (despite screenshots I sent from their site). I’ve submitted proof and asked for reimbursement — fingers crossed. I’ve used other international SIMs that actually worked, so this was especially frustrating. It felt like a gamble you regret.
Saved my trip, honestly
aloSIM saved my trip — their support actually fixed my data issue fast, no, really fast. I grabbed a 30-day plan for Japan and at first the data wouldn’t work, which was super annoying. Michael jumped on it, checked things out and gave me aloCash credit so I could get online again. Way quicker and fairer than experiences I’ve had with other companies that drag their feet. Pretty relieved and grateful it went this smoothly — I’ll use aloSIM again for sure.
Skip it for CDMX
this SIM was basically useless for me in Mexico City. I kept getting random full connection drops on my iPhone — sometimes showing bars but nothing would load — so I ended up pausing my day a few times just to stand on a corner and wait for Google Maps or a translator to breathe. I use these tools all the time for work and getting around, so that was annoying and honestly felt a bit unsafe at night. Weirdly, it worked fine in Baja/San Diego/LA/Vancouver last year, so it's not the concept, just this city. On the plus side, the setup guides got way better since 2023, so props for that. But reliability matters more than neat instructions, and here it just wasn’t there.
Hotel-hallway moment
appreciate the quick replies and that Hushed itself was fine, but the whole process and the unexpected deactivation left me frustrated. I won’t recommend AloSim based on this trip.
