San José, Tortuguero, La Fortuna, Monteverde and back in nine days. We saw loads, hiked tougher trails, and had some memorable wildlife moments from boat rides and the sloth sanctuary — those were real highlights. El Establo’s views are worth the stop too.
Delivery-wise, plan for rough travel. Expect long bus transfers, bad roads, and wet conditions even in what’s supposed to be dry season. In Tortuguero the boat landing is a mess — very muddy, ankle-deep at times — so the transfer from bus to boat is awkward and a little risky for luggage. They said an improved landing was planned, but it wasn’t done while we were there. Also, internet in Tortuguero is unreliable; phone reception mostly worked (we used T‑Mobile), but don’t count on steady Wi‑Fi.
Customer service deserves its own note. Globus had a few missteps — scheduling glitches, missed transfer details, a couple of excursions that weren’t fully documented at booking — but they actually owned the problems and worked with the local operator (SwissTravel) to sort things out. Communication from SwissTravel came through WhatsApp a lot, which is fine if you use it; it’s not great if you don’t. The guides on the ground were excellent, knowledgeable, and helpful, which goes a long way when things go sideways. So yeah, initially skeptical, but satisfied by how the issues were handled in the end.
Practical tips: bring quick-dry clothes and layers (everything stays damp), skip heavy cotton, and bring your own bug spray — it was shockingly expensive locally. US dollars were widely accepted, and rooms had hair dryers and 110V outlets, so less to worry about there. Lodging was rustic in Tortuguero but improved after that; hot water wasn’t a problem.
If I could advise someone: double-check that any late-added excursions are reflected in your itinerary docs, make sure you’re set up on WhatsApp, and be prepared for muddy transitions and long rides. No major regrets — it was a memorable trip and they fixed the issues — but go in prepared for the delivery glitches so they don’t sour things.Bus Seat Memories
an empty cave, some tea and cookies, nothing genuine. Two other excursions had the same formula in different towns. On the plus side the tour director and driver were solid, kept us informed and on schedule, which matters when you squeeze trips into a busy work life. Hotel quality was underwhelming. Overall useful but not great value; mixed feelings.
