    Halfway Turnaround

keep regular checks and don’t let mornings get sloppy, and maybe clean the lot more often. With that, I’ll give it another shot.

efficient, no nonsense, and exactly what I wanted. The class is an intense 60 minutes — five circuits, four moves each — and it moves. Jen keeps the music tight and, more importantly, she demonstrates alongside us so you’re not guessing what “good” looks like. That was huge for me. I’m picky about form (Army Airborne training back in ’74 set a high bar), and her circuits passed that test without question. What really stands out is how she adapts things. I’ve got degenerative disc disease and a compression fracture around T4–T5, so the classic burpee/mountain-climber stuff is a no-go. Jen always offers practical alternatives — rowing, elevated versions, controlled reps — so I can keep up with the class without trashing my back. That matters because this isn’t just about looking fit for me; it’s functional. I’ve done five polar expeditions (three Arctic, two Antarctic) and I need the strength to haul myself back onto a Zodiac if it flips or gets swamped — yes, that happened a few years ago in the Antarctic and I don’t want to be the weak link. The studio itself is well located in Old Town, clean, and straightforward — nothing overdone, which I like. Staff have been helpful when I’ve asked about schedules or class swaps. One complaint I’d pass along: the Tuesday slot that runs 11:00–11:55 overlaps awkwardly with Jen’s noon start. A Tai Chi class stretches right up until then, so warming up is cramped and it breaks the flow. If management could nudge that class to end a bit earlier (say 11:45), it would make a real difference. Overall I’m glad I stuck with APEX — it’s practical, demanding, and it delivers the exact kind of strength and balance training I need.
