Unexpected headache from the cleaning policy March 13, 2026

I'm on a plane, half a world away, and the one thing I expected to be settled — a professional cleaning before the next guest — evaporates overnight. I signed up with Kindred because they promise pro cleanings before and after stays. That was the selling point for me, plain and simple. I followed their instructions to the letter, left the place uncleaned as requested, filled out the forms, and then my guest canceled a day before arrival. Fine, cancellations happen. What I didn't expect was that the cleaners would also be cancelled, and that I would be left scrambling from abroad to find last-minute professional help that costs way more than the cleaning fee covers.
What bothered me most was the policy mechanics: guest cancels, they lose some fees but still get most of the cleaning fee back, and the platform essentially keeps the admin cut. So the host — the person who did the prep and is actually on the hook for the place being guest-ready — gets left holding the bag. Seems backwards. I get why they refund guests, but there should be a provision to at least send one cleaning or split costs when a cancellation happens so late.
On the flip side, the listing setup and booking interface were straightforward. The site walks you through the steps and the support docs are clear, which I appreciated while I was getting started. That small bit of polish kept me from completely walking away. If Kindred tightened the cancellation/cleaning policy to protect hosts more, I'd consider giving it another shot. For now, advice to other hosts: assume you might need a backup cleaner and factor that into your pricing. A little skepticism goes a long way, but some parts of the service actually work well enough to make me hesitant to write them off entirely.
