    Not worth the markup

this broker cost me way more than the help was worth. We were moving from NC to IL and had a truck plus a vehicle tow arranged, but when we showed up the tow wasn't there. So we had to rent a different truck and get a new tow, which pushed everything back. I called Hire-A-Helper to say we'd be about two hours late and the mover said that was fine - at no point did anyone mention a same-day cutoff. An hour later the broker called to say the helpers needed to be rescheduled. The booking was for two local helpers, unloading only, two-hour minimum, $319 originally. Rescheduling the next day added a $90 fee. In the end I paid roughly $420 and got under an hour of actual help. It's not a disaster, it worked eventually, but the communication was inconsistent and the pricing felt unfair. My advice: confirm cutoff rules and consider hiring movers directly, or be prepared to lose time and money.

    Two-hour miracle, paperwork migraine

careful with the boxes, fast, no drama. They finished in about half the time, which was a weird mix of "awesome" and "wait, what?" I told them I wanted to tip them well; they deserved it. Then the annoying part: they said they had to leave for another job at 3pm even though my booking supposedly covered until 5. That felt shady. I called the platform to question the charge because I thought billing would match actual hours. Nope — they charged the full $750 almost immediately while I was trying to dispute it, which was frustrating and made me pretty annoyed at the company. Still, despite the billing mess, I was genuinely pleased with the movers themselves — they did an excellent, surprisingly pleasant job. So shrug: loved the people who lifted the heavy stuff, not so much the paperwork. Tip the crew, double-check the billing.

Mixed feelings — movers solid, company process not so much

the two guys who actually moved my stuff did a good job, but the whole scheduling and billing situation from the company put me through unnecessary stress. I found them on HireAHelper after a neighbor tipped me off, and at first I thought, okay, cool — local rec, sounds fine. Then things went sideways. I prepaid $225.99 for a two-hour job with a start window around noon. At 12:17 on move day I get a text that they’re running behind because of the previous job and that they wouldn’t get to me until like 4 PM. That forced me to send home extra friends/help I’d already arranged and paid for, which sucked. I messaged them asking flat-out if they’d adjust for the delay and whether they could stay later if needed; I said I’d pay the amount we’d agreed on, and I did not agree to open-ended extra billing. Long story short, because the previous job overran they ended up finishing my move the next morning. After the job, I was told over the phone that it totaled six hours and the charge was over $700. I disputed it right away and asked for an itemized invoice before agreeing to anything. I never got that clear, revised invoice before charges went through. Later they claimed two extra hours had been authorized, which I dispute, and promised credits (even for the truck time) didn’t show up on the bill. Look, the movers worked hard and were professional — that part I can honestly say I appreciated — but the company’s scheduling practices and the way they handled disputed billing felt sloppy and, frankly, unfair. Customers shouldn’t be pressured to approve charges on the spot without documentation. I told them I’d consider a partial compromise if they sent proof; I’m still waiting. If they tighten up scheduling, put disputed charges in writing before processing, and clarify when extra hours are billed versus offered as a courtesy, this would be a much easier recommendation.
