30 a.m. and I’m half-sitting on the curb like a sad picnic blanket, keys in one hand, phone in the other — that’s where this whole thing kicks off. I’d used the roadside cover before for the usual commuter mishaps, nothing glamorous, so I assumed this would be the same: a quick call, a tow, home. Instead I got long pauses on hold, an optimistic “we’ll try to swing someone by,” and then... silence. Someone did swing by, to confirm the battery was dead. That was it. No tow, no plan, no offer to arrange a taxi. Just a guy nodding and disappearing into the night.
Using the service that morning felt weirdly like being promised a pizza and getting a menu instead. Practical stuff: the app/texts gave me a time window but no follow-through, the phone staff sounded rehearsed, and when I asked about alternatives they were oddly evasive. I ended up calling a different company who managed to get my car home the next day — surprise positive — they were faster and actually had a truck available, which was a relief.
I use this coverage for daily errands, school runs, the odd late shift; I keep it for the security of knowing someone will turn up. This time it didn’t feel secure. Emotionally it was a mix of irritation and disbelief — it’s cold at 4 a.m., you know? — but also a weird bit of gratitude because the other recovery folks were great and the tow driver who actually came with the second company was the kind of person who narrates your life like a small-town radio host, which cheered me up.
Bottom line: the concept is handy, the promise is nice on paper, but the execution that night fell flat. I’d use them again only if I had no other choice, and I’d keep my phone on speed-dial for a backup.Left on the hard shoulder
people sounded fine enough, polite even, but the estimates and directions they gave kept changing and that’s where the confidence crumbled.
