Honestly, I wouldn’t call this safe — the ladder gave way and shoved me under while I was getting out of the pool in May. I noticed obvious corrosion right away. Manager kind of shrugged, said nothing about maintenance, so I emailed the hotel and head office. A month later they asked for photos, but when I tried to upload them the system blocked me. They apparently got the message last week, yet no real response. I started out worried and left a bit shaken, and now I’m mostly annoyed — it’s fine otherwise, just not handled well.
Upgrade? Not really
Halfway through the week I kept thinking about the booking doubts I had — I almost canceled when a colleague tipped this place and the photos looked too good to be true. We wanted an upgrade from the Princess chain hotel we'd enjoyed, but that feeling never fully left. Rooms are tired, pool is small, food choices thin. We tried the all-inclusive-plus thinking it'd be worth it; not much extra. On the plus side, one barista there made a surprisingly good espresso and a receptionist actually sorted a late room change fast. Overall ok, not enough to make me rebook.
Not really a sale
the "sale" ended up costing me more than booking a week earlier. I only needed a simple, low-key family trip — my back was acting up and we were desperate for some rest — so I was watching the price closely. Went into Blue Monday expecting a drop; instead the site bumped the per-night rate then applied a discount, so the math looked worse. Before the sale the whole stay was about $4,800; during the sale it jumped to roughly $5,200. Per night went from around $650 to about $900 and then they said, hey, sale price — but that was after inflating the base. Felt like a sneaky trick. I even checked other resorts: Bahia Principe was roughly $1,400 cheaper for our family dates. Misleading and annoying, honestly.
Late-night check-in, stayed for everything else
bar shuts at 11pm which felt early, rooms could use a bit of TLC and a little table by the sunbeds would’ve been handy. Also, some grab support coming out of the shower would help (personal thing). Overall, comfy, convenient, and would return.
Delivery wake-up call
Woke up to a chorus of deliveries every morning — crates and people yelling names as they walked in. We were there a few nights; room was nice (big bed, decent view but faced the service road — my bad). First night I was eager for the buffet, but the food came lukewarm even when fresh trays appeared — like someone hit snooze on the warming lamp. Evening shows were fun, but the bar team started packing up as soon as the music ended, so asking for a late drink felt like interrupting a bedtime story (three staff kept vanishing behind the counter). Drinks were good when they showed up. Staff were generally friendly, but repeated delivery noise and spotty service made it a one-time visit for me.
Small nerves, big surprise
ask for a quieter table and be a bit specific about what you want — that helped. Overall I left feeling pretty glad I went, not annoyed like I worried I would be. Little bumps here and there, but more thumbs up than not.
Kitchen-dance moment
I was making coffee, phone buzzed, refund hit my account, and I did a tiny kitchen dance. Not saying it was smooth — it was clunky, annoying, and way too slow — but it worked in the end. If you need speed and friendly reps, maybe not your best bet; if you can tolerate hassle, you might get what you deserve eventually.
Night shift disappointment
I lay awake thinking about how odd it is that a brand name I’ve trusted could feel this sloppy. The room I got on check-in had obvious issues — carpets with stains, a toilet that dripped, and worst of all the door wouldn’t shut properly. They moved me, which I appreciated, but the AC in the new room just didn’t work. It’s 2 a.m., I’m sweating and pacing, and the in-room phone was dead so I had to go down to reception twice. On the bright side the staff did try to help and didn’t act annoyed, which I was grateful for — small mercy. Still, it’s worrying when a supposedly new property has so many basic problems. I’ve stayed at other chains where upgrades or fixes happened quickly, so this felt below the usual standard. I’m glad they offered another option eventually, but honestly I left feeling let down and I’ll think twice before booking here again.
Not coming back, despite some good bits
I won't be returning. We used the hotel as a base for a long weekend by the sea — drove down, wanted a relaxed break and easy access to town. Booking was fine. Finding the place by car was a nightmare though; the one-way streets and pedestrian zones turned what should've been a ten-minute drive into a stress test. The room looked okay at first. It was on the first floor and gave a side glimpse of the water, but it also faced another building so privacy was nearly zero. Worse, it overlooked a loud sports bar that smelled and kept the noise up late. When we asked to switch, they suggested a smaller cheaper room with no refund, then a more expensive upgrade, finally settling halfway. That felt awkward. Staff were genuinely helpful and the hotel was spotless, so credit where it’s due. Breakfast had good cold options but the hot selection was meh and lukewarm. Parking was the real sting — expensive and no real alternatives nearby. Overall, decent cleaning and service, but the location quirks and extra costs ruined the ease of the trip.
Great location, but bring a checklist — and patience
I would stay here again only with caution — the place has real potential and some nice things going for it, but be prepared to double‑check everything the minute you walk in. We paid premium rates expecting a smooth, upscale stay and honestly it wasn’t, so yeah, mixed feelings. The good bits: the setting and the vibe really are lovely, and a few staff members tried to help. The not‑so‑good bits: when we arrived our suite clearly hadn’t been cleaned properly — hair, crumbs in places that should’ve been spotless. We called housekeeping and they came back, which was fine, but it’s annoying when your first impression is dealing with basics. Then the living room TV didn’t work at check‑in, which they fixed after a call, again okay but it adds up. On day two the AC units started acting up — they would power on and then cut out after a few seconds. While we were trying to sort that out we heard a loud crash upstairs. Turns out a bathroom mirror had fallen and shattered; shards made it past a closed bathroom door into the bedroom. That was legitimately scary — could’ve been much worse if someone had been inside. We called management and were offered another room in the same category, smaller than what we booked. The manager’s attitude was pretty indifferent; shrug, “that’s all we can do.” No compensation, they said it’s not their policy. I’ve had issues at other hotels before and usually there’s at least a bit of goodwill — here that was lacking, which disappointed me. Emotionally, I was rattled more than angry — it’s scary when safety is involved — but some staff did try to respond and the location/view kept it from being a total write‑off. So, in short: good spot, sketchy execution. If you go, inspect the room, insist on a proper fix, and maybe don’t bring young kids unless you get clear assurances.
Buzz and slow replies
We got there in June with the whole family and the first thing that hit me wasn’t the beach — it was the mosquitoes. Opened the balcony and it was like a tiny flying army. We had two rooms; I spent the first hour swatting maybe 60–80 of them. My in-laws weren’t as lucky and their kids were bitten all week. One of them ended up sick afterwards and the doctor said dengue was a real possibility, which honestly put a cloud over the holiday. I asked reception several times to see the director, Alejandro, and never once did he come by or return a call in the week we were there — that felt lazy and pretty unprofessional.
Broken trust, pricey disappointment
big entrance, lots of marble, someone stocked the minibar. First impression was “wow,” but that wow faded fast. It started with little things that piled up: slow room service, drains that were clogged with hair the first three mornings, furniture that felt more like outdoor patio pieces than a suite’s living room. Small stuff, annoying, but fixable, right? Then the worst happened — $700 missing from the in-room safe. That’s the detail I keep thinking about, because it stopped being just an inconvenience and became a complete breakdown in trust.
Barcelo Hotel, Guatemala City
I booked at room at Barcelo, Guatemala City for March 19th 2025 through Expedia.com for one night. I was not able to make it to the hotel on March 19th due our bus being turned around at the edge of the city by massive demonstrations, road blockages and fires. I contacted the only number I had while in transit for the concierge desk and informed them we couldn't enter the city. The concierge referred me to another number which did not pick up. I contacted the hotel via email upon my return home and have been told they could not refund the night's charges. It was booked as "non-refundable" but demonstrations with police blockades and fires might be a good reason for an exception. I will never stay at another Barcelo on any trip in the future,
Hotel booking in Mexico
Oh my gosh, it was seriously terrible! I booked a hotel in Mexico and it was just awful. I had to sleep on the floor for four nights straight. Ew, so gross. Don't even think about booking with them, seriously. Trust me on this, alright?
Stayed at a hotel chain before
The food was just okay, the rooms were meh, the pool was small, and don't even get me started on the all-inclusive upgrade - not worth it at all.
Rats at a beach hotel
Ew, I spent some time at this beach hotel and let me tell you, it was straight out of a horror movie! The room I got stuck in was infested with rats, I mean real rats running all over the place. I could hear them scurrying inside the walls and even caught sight of them in the room! It was beyond disgusting, I was in total disbelief. To top it off, they were even hanging out in the toilet! Like, seriously, how does that even happen? The whole thing was a nightmare, I couldn't wait to get out of there.
Family vacation in June
My family and I stayed at a hotel in Varadero, Cuba last month. It wasn't great because there were a ton of mosquitoes in our rooms. I tried my best to get rid of them, but my in-laws' kids got bitten a bunch, and one even got Dengue fever. The hotel staff, especially the Director, didn't do much to help, and that was really disappointing and annoying.
Travel booking disappointment
My experience with this company has been a total letdown. I was so excited for my first trip outside of the US, but ever since I booked it's been nothing but a hassle. I've been waiting for over a month now for a refund they promised me, and no one seems to know what's going on. It's frustrating not knowing what's happening with my money. And on top of that, the language barrier has been a nightmare. It's been tough to find someone at customer service who speaks good English. It's been a struggle getting the help I need. Overall, dealing with this company has been a huge disappointment and I won't be using them again.

My last trip with Barcelo was Bulgaria for a family holiday. The travel agency is quite good and has the great offers that comes under the budget. also they have various themed options, which is attractive as hell
