if you paid less, you’re lower in the pile. Hearing that made a lot of us suspicious about the pattern we were seeing — most of the 12 people pulled aside were women, many of whom didn’t speak fluent English, and that felt exploitative. It also turned out the same route had been overbooked three days in a row. That looks like a tactic, not an accident. So while I was relieved when the manager finally owned up and provided options — that’s the moment I felt satisfied enough to stop fuming — I can’t call the whole thing acceptable. The delay cost people time, plans, and peace of mind. Some got rerouted; some didn’t. The process took advantage of people who were tired and had no energy to fight. In short: the crisis management at the end was decent, honest and practical enough for me to feel taken care of, but the setup and the transparency before that were poor. They fixed things in the moment, partially, but I’d want clearer rules and better upfront communication next time. Train staff to speak up earlier, make overbooking practices transparent, and don’t rely on passengers’ fatigue to minimize complaints.
Downgraded and stuck in loops
I’m done with Etihad after a paid Business seat ended up as Economy and support made a mess of fixing it. I booked a long-haul business ticket for a trip back to Europe last month, expecting the usual reliability — that’s not what happened. First impression at check‑in: fine, smooth, I thought okay, this will be a normal trip. That changed fast. Mid-journey the connecting segment disappeared from their system and we were reassigned to Economy without a clear explanation. Under EU Reg. 261/2004 we should’ve been offered a large refund (roughly 75% of that portion), but instead they tried to sidestep responsibility.
They also charged an extra €225.42 for seat selections even though the fare was Business — felt like a double-dip. Baggage arrived about 24 hours late and came back badly scuffed; local ground staff refused to file a PIR, which I learned later is standard procedure, so that was another headache.
What surprised me, oddly enough, was that inflight crew were polite and the food was decent considering the downgrade — a small bright spot in the middle of a frustrating chain of events. That said, the post‑flight customer care was the real problem: over several days I dealt with multiple agents (different names, same script), and none handled the facts or took ownership. One agent even implied their system prevents repeated legitimate rejections of bad offers — it sounded like a technical block to force acceptance. They proposed €96 when the legal claim is closer to €750, so I added up my total claim to €1,075.42 and moved on.
I stopped engaging with chats after the same copy/paste replies and filed the case with the Austrian passenger rights agency and legal counsel. If you book premium and want your rights honored, be prepared to escalate and don't expect quick fixes from frontline support. Small perks onboard won't make up for the administrative runaround I had to endure.Flight ticket
