this used to be a reliable option for big family stays, but after this trip I wouldn’t count on them for a stress-free week. I’ve booked with them several times over the years and usually it went fine, which is why this felt especially disappointing — it wasn’t one small hiccup, it was a string of them that added up.
Unexpected mess and an illegal fee
I booked a month in a high-end LA place via Plum Guide / Onefinestay and expected a certain level of readiness. What we walked into felt like the owners had just left in a hurry. There was food in the freezer, their car was parked where our spot should have been, and personal stuff was scattered around. Outdoor areas were not cleaned (BBQ looked like it hadn’t been used by guests in months) and we literally had to move the owners’ clothes out of closets to make room. The handover team did show up and tried to help, and to their credit they were earnest, but there’s only so much you can do when the property wasn’t prepared as a rental to begin with. So that part was frustrating — more house-sit than a professional short-term rental, honestly.
