dropping $4,295 for the unit and then being told you need a $60/month subscription to use it properly feels like a slap. There should be a basic tier for owners, at least. Also, prerecorded classes are fine, but I’d pay more to actually talk to a trainer sometimes — live feedback would be gold. All that said, I’m glad I got it and I tell friends about it, just with a little warning about the subscription.
Finally worth it — after a rocky start
The whole thing started like a little comedy of errors. Delivery guys at the wrong building, me waving from the sidewalk while they refused to drive two blocks — that set the tone. I almost walked away right then. I had doubts beforehand anyway. It’s pricey, and I wasn’t sure I needed another piece of fitness gear crowding my tiny apartment. But I kept coming back to the idea of saving gym time and having real strength coaching at home.
Wall-mounted surprise
the form feedback caught a tiny habit I didn’t even know I had. Not perfect, but for my routine it’s been worth it.
Quietly impressive, with one caveat
I first saw Tonal at a friend’s place and I was curious enough to try it. Setup was straightforward and the interface is clean. Tracking progress is by far the thing I like most — it actually tells you when to push more or back off, and the smart features like controlled eccentric work are legit helpful. My family uses it too, so it gets regular time. That said, there’s one real drawback worth mentioning. Some movements create odd torque on the mounting wall. I noticed it during single-arm rows when the pull went kind of parallel to the screen. It felt like it put unnecessary stress on the stud. You can change your hand angle or pull perpendicular and it helps, but that’s an extra consideration, especially in older homes with smaller studs. Not a dealbreaker for me. It works, it tracks, and it’s better than free weights for certain goals. Still, if you rent or have thin walls, think about mounting options before you buy.
