filenames came back but the files themselves were basically unusable. Frustrating, kind of a false hope. Support at the software company said I could pay for their manual recovery service, which felt expensive at first glance, but still cheaper than the local shop, so after a lot of back-and-forth with my dad I decided to go for it.
The human side of this was what stuck with me. The techs examined the drive and it kept disconnecting. They didn't give up or rush me through options; instead they methodically tried things, kept reconnecting, and traced the problem to a specific file access. That was surprising — I didn't expect them to dig that deep. They worked in bursts, reconnecting dozens of times, pulling out folders bit by bit. The first day they put in around nine hours, starting midmorning and not stopping until the evening, then came back the next day with different specialist tools and wrapped it up. In total, about 13 hours of patient work.
I want to be clear: the paid manual service isn't cheap and I worried about throwing money at nothing. But in the end they recovered the important stuff, and their careful, steady approach made it feel worth it. If I had one small gripe, it would be that a few more status updates during the long stretches would have calmed me — I was left refreshing my inbox a few times. Still, the combination of specialist tools and hands-on patience was impressive. For anyone in the same spot: expect to pay, expect it to take time, but plan on them actually getting into the weeds and recovering data that basic software couldn't.Surprised it actually worked (mostly)
slow, patient, and it actually suggested PowerShell snippets and ways to filter and make sense of the mess. Over several sessions it nudged me through the corners of the app and helped recover the stuff I needed.
It's not perfect — the interface can be confusing, the scan length is brutal, and the price still stings — but the end result was solid. If they polished the result-interpretation and made the AI less manual, that would be great. Would I use it again? Probably, but mostly because that AI did the heavy lifting this time.
