the agent’s assurances didn’t match the actual state of charge, and that shaped the whole day. We were also told the office closes at 7 pm and there was nowhere to park near our hotel, so we were locked into that return time unless we wanted to find another drop-off point.
We drove out, figuring we’d top up on the way back. That should have been straightforward, but it wasn’t. We hit eight different charging points before finding one that worked. Some stations were out of order, some were Tesla-only, some required specific apps or accounts we didn’t have, and some simply didn’t start. That sequence felt like a chain of small failures: each charger that didn’t work added stress and ate into the time we had to return the car. Meanwhile Europcar’s phone system was just an automated tree most of the time; there’s an emergency number but the person who answered asked if we needed a tow and, unless the answer was yes, said they couldn’t do anything. That was blunt and unhelpful. We tried calling multiple times and got little to no real assistance.
Eventually, kind strangers pointed us to a hotel charger that did work, and we made it back but by then it was after 7 pm. Because we couldn’t drop the car at the original office after hours and had nowhere to park, we were advised — by a tow driver, oddly enough — that returning the vehicle to the airport was an option. We did that and paid an extra 15 EUR to make it happen. On arrival at the airport desk the staff were understanding and polite; they sympathized and even said something like Spain isn’t well set up for driving EVs, which is fair and true. That was the only part of the customer service experience that felt supportive. Earlier, at pick-up, the young man had reassured us repeatedly that charging wouldn’t be an issue, which was wrong information. Had we been told the truth — that charging infrastructure can be unreliable and that the car might not start with a near-full range — we would have planned differently and avoided a lot of stress.
I’m grateful we eventually solved it and that the airport staff were helpful. I’m also left wishing Europcar would do better on two concrete things: 1) present the actual battery percentage and realistic expected range at handover, and 2) provide a real, reachable support line for EV issues or at least offer clear instructions and useful local charger maps. A small disclaimer at pick-up — “charging infrastructure in this region can be spotty” — would have changed how we planned the day. If you’re thinking of renting an electric car in Spain, take a charger plan, extra time, and don’t assume the pick-up agent’s reassurance equals reality. Also consider asking for the exact battery percentage in writing before you drive off. They even said, “Driving an electric car in Spain is stressful because the infrastructure isn’t ready.” That line would have been useful at pick-up, if I’m honest.
I reached out afterward asking for a refund of the extra fees — the 20 euros at the counter, the 15 for the airport drop-off — because the whole point of the package was supposed to be that we wouldn’t have charging problems. Europcar’s reply was basically a copy of the contract and a note that I’d authorized those charges. That felt like a brush-off. Overall, the car itself drove fine, comfortable, no weird noises, pleasant to use in the moment — that was the silver lining — but the experience around it, the lack of accurate info up front and the slim support when things went sideways, made the day unnecessarily stressful. I’d rent from them again only if they were upfront about charging limitations and if I had a confirmed plan for where to charge first.Replacement ruined the trip

Brakes squeaked and a few panels rattled. Fuel use seemed higher. The infotainment was either ancient or missing, which mattered less but still felt wrong. I’ve rented from Europcar and other big companies for over ten years. Usually it’s fine. This time that contrast stood out. The first car had been surprisingly good. That made the downgrade even more obvious. Staff at the branch were polite enough. I’ll give them that. They tried to explain the inspection and the decision to withdraw the original car. Still, I was left with a vehicle that didn’t meet what I booked, nor what I’d expect from a reputable rental. This is a contract issue. You should get a comparable vehicle when one fails. I asked for a proper replacement then and there. I asked for tires that weren’t critical, working AC, no odor, and generally a car in decent condition. That didn’t happen. I will return to the branch in the morning and expect a concrete fix: the same model or an equivalent in proper condition. If not, I will terminate the rental and file a formal complaint with head office and post this experience elsewhere. Not dramatic, just factual. The holiday was impacted. A quick, competent fix now would still be appreciated.
