I’ve had mixed luck with broker sites before, sometimes they’re great, sometimes they leave you stuck with fine print. Still, Rentcars looked decent, prices were good, so I took a gamble. That gamble nearly blew up at pickup. Klasswagen, the local agency, insisted the credit card had to show my full first name and last name. Problem: Dutch cards often print initials plus last name, and I had exactly that. I tried to explain, showed every ID and the confirmation email, showed my bank app, everything. They weren't having it. They wanted me to buy their extra insurance on the spot — which was more than half the booking cost — or they’d void the reservation and charge me double. So yeah, panic moment.
I phoned Rentcars while the Klasswagen folks kept repeating their policy like a script. Rentcars actually stayed calm, reached out to Klasswagen and tried to sort it out. Klasswagen employees just refused to talk, acted offended, and wouldn’t accept Rentcars’ verification. That was infuriating; I’ve dealt with pushy local vendors before, but this felt different — unprofessional and borderline dishonest. Rentcars didn’t magically fix the stupid credit-card-name rule, but they did offer to cancel and search for alternatives. They were patient on the call, called other companies for me (they even checked with Sixt to see if the credit card rule was real), and then came back with a different option that worked. So in the end I got a car, not the hassle-free dream I pictured, but it worked out.
What I keep coming back to is: I was skeptical before booking, and my skepticism was partly justified because Klasswagen behaved badly. However, Rentcars themselves were actually reliable — helpful, patient, and willing to take the time on the phone. They should be clearer on their site that some partners have weird ID or card-name requirements. That one omission cost me time, stress, and money because the alternative rates were higher even without the forced insurance. I’d have appreciated a heads-up in the booking summary.
Would I use Rentcars again? Yes — but only if I double-check the local partner's policies or stick with better-known brands. Long story short: after digging through the voucher, calling someone who sounded like a manager, and me repeating the reservation details, we paid a small extra amount (yeah, weirdly specific $15.70) just to get the keys. The car itself was fine — drove perfectly, no issues — and for that I’m thankful. Still, losing almost an hour and a half before we even left, and being told our return time wouldn’t be adjusted, was frustrating. Feels unfair: if they’re late, we don’t get time back, but if we’re late we get penalized.
I’ve used the booking site a bunch of times and they’ve usually been rock solid, so this was a surprise. I’m writing because the delivery and customer service were the real problems here, not the car. They should sort the coordination with their partners or stop listing companies that won’t honor prepaid things. I recently booked a car rental online for a trip and man, it was a disaster. I showed up at the rental place after hours because my flight got delayed, only to be told they had no cars for me during my whole booking. They wouldn't give me a refund and just told me to talk to the website where I made the booking. It was so annoying and disappointing. I would definitely suggest avoiding this rental company.
First-time car rental in the US
The app did most of the work for me, so I was able to just go to the car rental place and get my car. When I got there, the service could be different depending on the location, but that's not Rentcars' fault. In the end, everything went well for my first time renting a car in the US.
