I was halfway through booting it up at the kitchen table when I finally relaxed — everything lit up, no weird dead pixels, ports worked, and the trackpad felt right. We got this X1 Carbon for my son to use for school and the commute to campus, though I’ll admit I borrow it for quick email and streaming now and then. Delivery was surprisingly quick, which took some worry off my plate. The only thing I noticed right away was a vinyl wrap around the lid and palmrest — not what I’ve seen on other refurb ThinkPads, and yeah it looks a little patched on close inspection, but it’s tidy, stays put, and you hardly notice it while typing. I even popped in a Linux Mint USB to check hardware before my kid sets up Windows 11, and everything behaved. Mildly picky, but overall I felt good handing it over.

The one oddball was the charger — an HP brick in a Dell box, which felt lazy and threw me off. Overall the buying flow was smooth, photos matched reality, and shipping was quick. Heads up: there are mixed reviews out there, and this was my first time with SMG, so ask about accessories if that matters to you. I'd buy again, but I'd ask about the charger first.
